backpack near 16 × 20 - measure it?
Soft backpack, not a suitcase, but it is close to the published 16 × 20 inch limit when full. Do they mean that as a real max size, or just “no giant hiking packs”?
drive to Pier 33 or just use transit?
We have a rental car and a morning Alcatraz booking. Parking near the pier sounds expensive and break-ins are mentioned everywhere. Is there any on-site parking at all, or should I just leave the car behind for this one?
mobility issues, will I still get the main Cellhouse experience?
The hill is the worry, not the museum itself. If I use S.E.A.T. to reach the top, am I still able to do the main Cellhouse floor/audio-tour experience, museum displays and basic visitor facilities in an accessible way?
miss the ferry - can they move me later that day?
Worried about traffic. If I miss my booked departure, can Pier 33 just move me to a later ferry that day, or is that wishful thinking?
first Alcatraz visit: Day or Night?
First time. Day Tour is cheaper and more flexible, Night Tour is more limited and costs more. I am not asking which is “better” in general, what actually changes about the experience enough to justify picking one over the other?
Alcatraz + Angel Island: can I choose the order?
Only one free day in SF and considering the combo. I see two morning departures with opposite island order. Is the order tied to the departure/group, or can you decide on the day which island to do first?
4-year-old - ticket or no ticket?
Our youngest will be exactly 4. Do I add a free toddler ticket anyway, or are 4-and-under genuinely no-ticket/no-count in the booking?
repeat visit - what does Behind the Scenes open that Day Tour does not?
I have already done the regular Day Tour once. The only reason I would pay $100+ this time is genuine access to places that are not on the normal public route. Is that actually the point of Behind the Scenes?
third-party Alcatraz package, how do I know it is legit?
Seeing packages that bundle Alcatraz with other San Francisco stuff. I know random street tickets are a bad idea. Are packaged/third-party tickets automatically fake, or is there a legitimate reseller route?
Alcatraz before an evening flight/dinner, how much buffer?
Trying to decide whether a 9:20 Day Tour is sensible before a fixed 5:30 commitment back in the city. The island visit is “2–3 hours”, but the return boat is flexible. What would you protect as buffer rather than planning to the minute?
Bay cruise around Alcatraz vs actually landing
Trying to explain this to someone who thinks every “Alcatraz cruise” is the same. What is the clean difference between the official island tour and a bay cruise that only goes around it?
Behind the Scenes vs normal Night Tour
Looking at Night Tour versus Behind the Scenes. The second one is much more expensive and seems to be a very long evening. Is the real difference just that it gets you into restricted areas first, and then continues the normal Night Tour?
is there much beyond the prison building?
Photography/history mix. Once I have done the Cellhouse, is there enough elsewhere on the island to justify not rushing back, like gardens, Industries building, Recreation Yard, etc.?
Angel Island combo: history gain vs less Alcatraz freedom
History is the reason I am going, not checking islands off a list. The combo gives me Angel Island too, but it also fixes chunks of the day. Is the trade basically “another major Bay history site” versus “more flexible time on Alcatraz”?

Check out at 10, ferry at noon, cabin suitcase with us. Is there luggage storage at Pier 33, or anywhere the cruise operator will hold it while we are on the island?
1969 Occupation history on the normal Day Tour?
I am especially interested in the Indians of All Tribes occupation. Do I need a special tour to see that history, or are the New Industries exhibit and surviving political messages part of what an ordinary Day Tour visitor can see?

8:40 ferry. If boarding is straightforward, is 8:20 enough or do they really mean 30 minutes early?

We have an America the Beautiful pass and I assumed it might cover Alcatraz because it is NPS. But the ticket looks mostly like ferry/audio tour. Does the park pass reduce anything here?
food for kids on Alcatraz - where can they actually eat?
Long morning with kids. I know we can bring water, but I am confused by the food rule. Can we pack snacks/lunch and eat somewhere on the island, or is food banned once you leave the ferry?
do I choose a return ferry when I book?
Day Tour question. Booking gives me the outbound time, but I cannot see a fixed return slot. Is the return basically “take a scheduled boat when you are ready”, subject to boarding space?
